Ever been in the incident meeting where someone asks, “How did this happen?” And the IT department responds, “Well, it was the cloud provider’s responsibility,” and then the vendor on the phone counters with, “No, it is very clearly the customer’s responsibility.” Once you start pulling in different cloud providers, there are many misconceptions with regards to who is responsible for handling what tasks. Many times, it is assumed the cloud service provider (CSP) is taking care of something, and to the mental back-burner it goes. However, this assumption leaves you open to attack, compromise and theft of IP; otherwise known as “resume building events.”

A recent article in the Hosting Tribunal cited that 94% of companies are already using a cloud service in some capacity, with a projected 83% of workloads to be cloud-based by the end of this year. 

There are many objective benefits offered by cloud computing, from elasticity to cost savings. However, while the cloud is meant to be user-friendly and easily spun up, its many configuration options are daunting. It is a space of infinite options and its rapid and wide-spread implementation has left many to learn by doing; those new to the cloud too often miss basic cloud computing principles.

Amazon Simple Storage service (S3) is an object storage service from Amazon Web Services (AWS) that allows customers to store and protect their data. For many companies, however, managing access control in S3 has remained a challenge, with several organizations making headlines by unintentionally exposing their objects. Fortunately, this can be prevented if customers know how to use the fundamental controls available to correctly define access to S3 buckets and the objects they store.
